Rare mission registry

 

Lot# 6436

Rare Baja California Mission register, dated 1755-1768, from The Mission Santa Gertrudis, with missionary Padre Jorge Retz, signed by several Jesuit priests, partially in Spanish as well as Latin and written in several hands. The title page noting Pope Benedict XIV; the date: 1755 and Santa Gertrudis Mission. Bound in original hide, the pages document the Christianized neophytes of Cochimi tribe members numerically and mostly in Christian surnames. The final entry is one paragraph dated January 1768, the month and year that the Jesuits were expelled from the Baja missions.  NB: a recent discovery, one of only a very a few known to exist from this particular mission. The overall size: 11.5"h x 9"w. REFERENCE: "The Americas" 52:1 July 1995, 71-80 titled: "Peregrinations of The Baja California Mission Registers" CONDITION: Hide is worn and stained with some separations, yet mostly intact. There is some staining and spotting on some pages and three pages are torn together vertical near binding approximately 5"
